Woman reunites with unknown sisters after decades, emotions soar

Maryanne Thumbwood’s search for her birth mother ended with a heartwarming reunion after 52 years of separation.

Having always felt a void in her life, Maryanne, who was adopted, yearned for a connection with her biological mother. It was not a reflection of her adoptive family’s love but rather a deep curiosity that fueled her quest.

Born in 1962 to Geraldine Mayhew in Canada, Maryanne was given up for adoption and never had the chance to meet her birth mother. Determined to find her, she registered with Canada’s community services, leaving her contact information in the hopes that they could assist in her search.

After three years, Maryanne received a letter from the agency stating that Geraldine had been located. The subsequent heartfelt correspondence from Geraldine revealed her love for Maryanne and explained the circumstances that led to her adoption. Though Geraldine had initially reconsidered giving up her baby upon seeing her, the agency insisted she could not revoke the adoption once the papers were signed.

Despite the distance and the passage of time, Maryanne held onto hope that she would one day meet her birth mother.

For eight years, Maryanne kept her search a secret, unknown to her adoptive family and friends in Australia. However, the letters eventually ceased, and she learned that her mother’s health prevented her from writing.

A year later, she received a letter from the Canadian community services bearing both good and bad news. While her mother had passed away, Maryanne discovered that her birth sisters, Ruth Mayhew and Christine Bissonnette, had registered with the agency.

Maryanne’s heart broke at the realization that her reunion with her mother would never materialize. Adding to her grief, this news came just two months after the passing of her stepmother. Uncertain if she should reach out to her birth sisters, Ruth and Christine, she hesitated.

However, Ruth and Christine, who had been at their mother’s side during her final days, learned about Maryanne and made the decision to fly to Australia and meet their long-lost sister.
