A woman gives a bottle of champagne for a one-year-old child’s birthday, sparking a heated debate.
‘I’m on my way to a first birthday party, and I actually got the parents a bottle of champagne instead of the child,’ Phoebe says in the video.
Parents usually go all out for their child’s first birthday. They want to make sure that their child’s first big milestone is one that no one forgets—or, more properly, that the 1-year-old forgets! When Phoebe Parsons, who goes by @phoebeacp on TikTok, was invited to a friend’s child’s first birthday party, she chose to give the baby’s parents a gorgeous bottle of champagne instead of a present. She posted a TikTok expressing her views and asking her followers if they thought departing from tradition was “fair.” “I would really love to know other peoples’ thoughts on this. I’m on my way to a first birthday party, and I actually got the parents a bottle of champagne instead of the child.”
She claimed that the one-year-old would not remember her birthday or the gifts she received and that there would be 50 additional visitors at the child’s party who would lavish the infant with gifts. It wouldn’t hurt to have one less. “So, do you think it’s fair for the first birthday party to buy the parents a present in place of the child?”
On this issue, people were divided. Some readers commented that it was a well-deserved gift and an excellent idea, saying, “Yes, it’s undoubtedly been one of the most difficult years of their lives, they deserve a treat!” “Omg yes!” one user exclaimed. For my only son’s first birthday, I received a bottle of scotch. Obviously, I needed it for the coming days. That makes sense!” Some mothers stated that it would have been more liked than “any obnoxious noisy toy.” Others stated that after the first year, a gift for parents was all that was required: “My favorite gift at my one-year-old birthday was a hotel coupon for me and my fiance and free babysitting for the night.”
Users on TikTok were split on whether the champagne was suitable. Most users felt that the parents deserved a gift, however many questioned if wine alone was sufficient as a gift. Others believed that the present was insufficient on its own and that it would have been better if it had been accompanied by anything else.”Not instead of, but alongside…,’ said another. “Yeah, but I’ll probably buy a little teddy for the baby,” added another. “Yes BUT! In addition to just a gift for the child. Or a bottle is more appropriate when the baby is born.” Some feel that there is no need to give gifts, “I wouldn’t buy them both a present.” For others, it depends on the situation, “In this situation, yes. Unless the parents get a lot, no.”
@phoebeacp Do you agree that this is a fair gift for a first birthday? #firstbirthday #champagne ♬ original sound – Phoebe Parsons
