Woman discovers $543 tucked in her KFC lunch and chooses the ethical path

Raised with the principle that one should never keep what doesn’t belong to them, JoAnn Oliver found herself applying this valuable lesson in an unexpected place: her local KFC.

It all began with a craving for a chicken pot pie. “I told my boss I’m going to KFC,” JoAnn explained. “I’m gonna get a pot pie that I wanted.”

Upon arrival, she was informed that they had run out of chicken pot pies. Instead, she decided to order a sandwich. Her order seemed perfectly ordinary, so she returned to her workplace to enjoy her lunch.

However, when she finally unwrapped her meal, she made a surprising discovery – hidden beneath her sandwich and fries was a substantial sum of money. To be precise, it amounted to $543.10.

JoAnn, who is currently caring for her husband battling terminal cancer, briefly pondered what she could do with this unexpected windfall. But deep down, she knew that keeping the money was not the right course of action. So, she promptly called the non-emergency line for the local police.

“I literally did not want anything to do with the money,” JoAnn explained. “That’s why I put it back in the bag and slid it to the side. I didn’t touch it even after that.”

The police arrived, and JoAnn accompanied them back to the KFC. There, a staff member revealed that it was all a mistake; the money was meant for a deposit. Moreover, this error could have potentially cost the manager their job.

Ultimately, JoAnn was reimbursed for her lunch and provided with a new sandwich. However, before she headed back to work once more, the Jackson Police Department snapped a picture of her and penned a heartwarming post on their Facebook page.

“Character and integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking!!!” the post declared. “Not only did Mrs. Oliver do the right thing but she saved the manager’s job. Mrs. Oliver, thank you for reminding us that we have amazing citizens in Jackson, and it’s people like you that make us great!”

Doing the right thing can be challenging, but JoAnn’s example illustrates that the outcome can be far more rewarding than any sum of money. They say that when you do what’s right, better and greater things follow. In JoAnn’s case, this might just hold true.

As it turns out, some KFC executives reached out to JoAnn to set up a GoFundMe account to support her husband’s care. To date, it has raised over $5,000.
