Bella Montoya, the woman who was discovered alive in her coffin, has tragically passed away while under intensive care. Ecuador’s health ministry has confirmed that the cause of her death was an ischemic stroke after spending a week in intensive care.
Initially, Montoya was admitted to a hospital in Babahoyo due to suspected stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest. Despite efforts to save her, her condition deteriorated, leading to her untimely demise.

However, on June 9th, the family made the decision to take her to a funeral home, only to be startled by strange noises emerging from the coffin.
Gilberto Balberán, Montoya’s son, expressed to The Associated Press, “It gave us all a fright. There were about 20 of us there. After about five hours of the wake, the coffin started to make sounds.”
Recognizing that Montoya was still alive, she was promptly rushed back to the hospital. Regrettably, her family announced her passing on Saturday, June 18th, after a seven-day period in intensive care.
The health ministry stated that she had been under “constant surveillance,” yet further details regarding the medical investigation surrounding the incident were not disclosed.
In response to the occurrence, the country’s ministry of health confirmed the establishment of a technical committee to assess the procedures concerning the issuance of death certificates by the hospital.
Balberán expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of information provided by the authorities, stating that the situation would not be left unresolved.

In a similar incident in 2021, an elderly woman had a startling awakening just moments before her scheduled cremation, after her family mistakenly believed she had passed away.
Shakuntala Gaikwad had reportedly contracted COVID-19 and was self-isolating at home when her condition deteriorated. Her family urgently transported her to the hospital, but due to the overwhelming surge of COVID-19 cases in India at the time, she was unable to secure a bed and had to wait in a private vehicle outside the hospital.
During this period, Shakuntala apparently ceased breathing, leading her family to conclude that she had breathed her last. Consequently, they brought her back home to prepare her body for cremation, only for the elderly woman to suddenly awaken mere moments before the funeral pyre was set ablaze.
According to reports, she opened her eyes and burst into tears. The current state of her health remains undisclosed.
