This was certainly the case for Vicky Umodu, a grandmother from Colton, California. She had moved to California to be closer to her grandchildren and was in need of furniture for her new home.

She checked Craigslist and found a living room set that was being given away for free. Though skeptical at first, she decided to call and was surprised to find out that it was genuine.

After arranging the furniture in her home, Vicky found an envelope filled with $36,000 cash hidden inside one of the cushions. She contacted her son, and they immediately called the previous owner to return the money.

The owner was grateful for their honesty and even offered to buy Vicky a new refrigerator since her home was still bare. Vicky did not expect any reward for her honesty, stating that “it’s just doing the right thing.”
