Touching moment as adopted boy receives first-ever birthday cake and reacts with deep appreciation

Upon their arrival at their new home, Joe and Jamie Walker, Abraham and his older brother James, couldn’t believe their luck and felt as if they had entered a “second heaven.”

“You pass through this before you go to the big heaven. That is what I believe so.” Abraham told CBS News.

You may ponder, what could make a young man regard a simple house as a second heaven?

The heartrending tale of Abraham and James will leave you speechless and undoubtedly bring tears to your eyes.

Facing a challenging beginning, these boys, originally from Sierra Leone, experienced homelessness. However, their fortunes changed when they found refuge in a local orphanage that provided them with shelter. It was there that Joe and Jamie Walker crossed paths with the boys, altering their lives forever.

Motivated by their strong desire to prevent the separation of the brothers, the compassionate couple made the decision to adopt them.

After completing the adoption process last fall, Joe and Jamie, accompanied by Abraham and James, traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina. The Walkers couldn’t contain their joy as they witnessed the awe and wonder in the boys’ eyes.

“Every little thing that we take for granted — coming home from the airport, I hit the button to open up the front gate — ‘Dad!’” Joe Walker shared with CBS News with a smile.

Now, these boys find themselves in a caring home filled with everything they never imagined they would have.

“Everything is magic to them,” he added.

The boys were constantly in awe of new experiences, finding wonder in even the simplest things such as a car wash.

On May 20th of last year, the family prepared a heartwarming surprise to celebrate Abraham’s 12th birthday.

Jamie posted a video on May 20th of Abraham’s 12th birthday surprise. In the video, she walks in with an orange cake with candles spelling out his name.

The young man cried.

Overwhelmed with shock and at a loss for words, Abraham couldn’t contain his emotions as tears streamed down his face, reflecting the immense joy he felt.

In Sierra Leone, birthdays were not celebrated, and the boys were unsure of their actual birth dates, adding to the significance of this heartfelt surprise.

He experienced the joy of having his own cake for the first time, marking his inaugural birthday celebration.

“I never celebrate them. I never knew it was my birthday,” Abraham said.

Abraham skipped blowing the candles on the cake and opted to rush toward his father, Joe, embracing him tightly before proceeding to Jamie for another heartfelt hug.

Abraham cried.

Despite everyone’s persistent reminders, he eventually blew out the candles on his cake. Afterward, he eagerly sprinted back to his father, embracing him once more. Laughter filled the room as they realized the young man had forgotten to make a wish, unaware that it was his first experience and he didn’t know the tradition yet.

“When I see the cake, I thought that is the most beautifulest thing I’ve ever seen,” Abraham said. “It’s not just a birthday cake. It’s a blessing cake.”

To Abraham, the cake represents more than just a sweet treat; it symbolizes the blessings he currently cherishes — the sense of belonging to a loving family and the joy of being surrounded by people who genuinely care for him and his brother.

These remarkable boys and their viral video carry a profound message that has the potential to teach us all a valuable lesson.
