Tim McGraw struggled greatly with alcohol. Fortunately, his wife stuck by him and pulled him out of a downward spiral. They remained together after that. They’ve been together for 28 years.
Tim McGraw met his wife, Faith Hill, for the first time briefly at the New Faces Show in Nashville. It was 1994, and the two only spoke briefly backstage. Tim was dating Kristine Donahue, and Faith had recently divorced Daniel Hill. Ironically, their situations were reversed the next time they met.
They had the opportunity to talk again two years later, in the Spring of 1996, on the Spontaneous Combustion tour. Tim had recently ended his engagement to Kristine, but Faith was now engaged to Scott Hendriks. Nonetheless, after a show, the two kissed, and Faith decided to call it quits on her engagement.
Their engagement story is full of twists and turns. Tim admitted that he had asked Faith to marry him on several occasions while they were dating. She continued to refuse, claiming she didn’t want to be involved with another country singer. She didn’t think it would work out at the time.
But the country singer didn’t give up. A few months after they began dating, the two were performing at an outdoor country festival. They were getting ready for the show in Tim’s trailer when he decided to ask Faith to be his wife again. The “There You’ll Be” singer was surprised at first.
Tim remembered:
“And she said, ‘You’re asking me to marry you at a country music festival in a trailer house? And I said, ‘Well, it’s pretty apropos if you think about it.’ She goes, ‘Are you serious?’ And I said, ‘Well, yeah, I’m serious.”
Tim was called to the stage at this point, and he had to leave without receiving a definitive answer. He returned to his trailer after his set, hoping to find Faith and finish the conversation. Sadly, she was not present. Instead, she scribbled in lipstick on the mirror, “Yes, I’m gonna be your wife.”
Faith Was There When Tim Was as Low
Tim and Faith’s relationship hasn’t always been the romantic tale it appears to be. They’ve had their fair share of fights and shouting matches. Tim, on the other hand, recognized that it’s all a part of being in love. He observed that love is not always easy. He stated that it is not a linear process.
They’ve both realized this over the years, and they’ve stuck by each other even when things seemed hopeless. The country singer has struggled with alcoholism in the past, and he claims that he would have died if it hadn’t been for his wife’s support.
Tim began drinking to relax before a performance at first. He has previously stated that he is a naturally shy person who needed some Jack Daniels to loosen up. But, after a while, he became reliant on it.’
He opened up, saying:
“I remember a moment when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, ‘I have to wake the kids up.’ I went straight to my wife and said, ‘This is where I’m at.'”
He admitted that he was scared at the time. He couldn’t function or perform if he wasn’t drinking. Fortunately, when he told her, she held him to calm him down, and with her help, he gradually broke the habit. He’s started working out lately. Since 2008, the singer has been sober.’
His way of life has also improved significantly. He has replaced his drinking addiction with healthy habits and has lost weight since quitting. The singer admitted that he is in a better place, but Faith remains his rock.
Tim and Faith Share Beautiful Family
Tim is happily married and celebrating his 26th anniversary with Faith in 2022, after being sober for about 23 years. To commemorate their long relationship, the two took to social media, where they shared numerous photos and declared their love for one another.
Faith and Tim have been living together in bliss since Faith helped Tim get through one of the most difficult times in his life. Gracie, Audrey Caroline, and Maggie Elizabeth McGraw are their three children.
The singer also commented:
“Faith saved my life in a lot of ways — from myself more than anything. I can go down a dark road sometimes, when you’re not feeling good about yourself, and she pulls me out. My wife makes me a better man.”
In an interview on Father’s Day, Tim opened up about his daughters, saying he can see a bit of himself and something from his wife in all three kids. Their three daughters are already grown up and have left the house. He commented on what it’s like being a father:
“They’re all completely different creatures,” he said. “But they all have big hearts, and they are all very polite and they really respect people, and they all feel like they wanna make a difference in the world. Hopefully we’ve instilled that into them.”
Faith also addressed motherhood, stating that her children come first. She stated that since becoming a mother, that has been her primary role, and that even singing is second to her children.
Many people would assume that Faith and her husband’s romance has died as they get older, but Tim loves to spoil his wife. Tim would plan a special surprise for her on Mother’s Day in particular. He stated that he enjoyed making the love of his life breakfast in bed.
