Stepmother breaks her back while catching stepdaughter who leaped off the roof to escape house fire

The lives of the Dawson family were significantly altered in a split second, but mom Crystal Dawson says she didn’t take a moment to regret on how she handled the day her house caught fire, despite the fact that it briefly immobilized her.

“I wouldn’t change a thing. My daughter is safe and that’s all that I was worried about.”

Crystal got up early on Friday to make a bottle for her 6-month-old baby. She then understood that something was very wrong.

The 30-year-old mother of three recalled, “I couldn’t even make it not even three steps into my living room before I was hit in the face with flames.”

BJ’s oldest son, 9, and daughter, 11, were locked in their rooms upstairs when Crystal, her husband BJ, and their infant managed to flee their Lynchburg, Virginia, house.

The siblings were successful in escaping through a window at the front of the house and onto a small roof. Crystal was able to catch her stepson as he leaped from the roof.

Brianna, her stepdaughter, hesitated even though the roof was about to collapse. She finally leaped, and Crystal also caught her.

“I caught her with everything I had in my chest.”

Crystal heard a pop as they both fell backwards. BJ was able to get his family to safety by crossing the street. But when the emergency personnel arrived, Crystal was unable to raise herself onto the stretcher.

She didn’t realize she had broken her T5 vertebrae until she arrived at the hospital. Despite being momentarily paralyzed, doctors are certain she will recover her ability to walk.

She’s presently awaiting surgery, according to a recent report.

Even though she suffered a life-changing injury and was “completely crushed,” Crystal insisted that she wouldn’t change a thing about how she responded that morning.

In order to assist the family, who lost everything in their home, a GoFundMe has been set up. While Crystal heals in the hospital, Brianna and her brother are living with their biological mother. Currently, BJ and his infant are residing with other relatives.

May God be with this family as they make their way through this terribly trying time.
