Frances Buzzard, or Miss Frances as she is known to the students and staff at Belle Elementary School in West Virginia, is a beloved school janitor who goes above and beyond to fulfill her duties.
She is always available to help out her colleagues and is especially sweet and caring towards the students. However, Miss Frances has a secret that the school principal, Amanda Mays, recently discovered.
Miss Frances has never had a birthday party. In honor of her upcoming 77th birthday, Principal Mays and the entire school staff decided to surprise Miss Frances with her first-ever birthday celebration.
On January 19th, just after lunch, Miss Frances and her fellow custodian Rendell Heater were called to the cafeteria. Unbeknownst to Miss Frances, the entire school was in on the surprise.
When she arrived, everyone shouted, “Surprise!” and wished her a happy birthday. The principal had even made Miss Frances wear a pink tiara and a “Happy Birthday” sash.
They showed her a touching video compilation of historic events with her edited into them, and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to her. They presented her with cards, banners, and an assortment of cupcakes, complete with a candle for her to blow out.
Miss Frances was overjoyed at the unexpected celebration. She explained that her family was very frugal, so they never celebrated birthdays or other occasions, and even though they had planned a party for her once, no one came because of the icy and cold weather.
Nevertheless, in the middle of the cafeteria, surrounded by her colleagues and the students she cares for so deeply, Miss Frances sat on a throne as the queen of the day, experiencing her very first birthday party.
