The beloved canine behind the Cheems Doge meme has passed away, prompting sadness among its fans.
Named Balltze, or lovingly referred to as Ball Ball, the dog garnered the moniker Cheems due to its fondness for cheeseburgers.
This pup rose to online stardom, following in the footsteps of another iconic Shiba Inu that inspired the Doge meme phenomenon.
That distinction belongs to a dog named Kabosu, who became the emblem of Dogecoin.
Balltze left its mark through meme sensations like “Boink” and “Swole Dog vs Cheems.”
As per KnowYourMeme, the Cheems memes typically involve the character playfully misspelling various words, often adding extra “M” letters for comedic effect.
The character’s initial appearance occurred on the Reddit page /r/dogelore in June 2019, quickly gaining traction as a popular meme.
Sadly, Kathy, the owner of the dog, shared a heartbreaking statement on social media, explaining the circumstances of the pooch’s passing.
“Ball Ball fell asleep on 18/8,” she wrote. According her, he passed away on Friday morning during his final thoracentesis surgery. Initially, they had plans to arrange chemotherapy or explore other potential treatments for him after this procedure, but it’s now too late. “Please remember the joy that Balltze brought to the world.”
She continued, “A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face connecting you and me, he has helped many people during the pandemic and brought a lot of joy to many of you, but now his mission has completed.”
“I believe he is running freely in the sky and having a lot of delicious food with his new friends.”
“He will always be inside my heart.”
“I hope he can continue to bring joy to everyone in the online world, that’s my only humble request.”
Kathy expressed her gratitude towards the veterinarians who provided care to Cheems during his last months of life, describing them as “very generous” and “helpful.”
In May of the previous year, it was revealed that Ball Ball had been experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, eventually receiving a diagnosis of pancreatitis.
Although the dog’s absence is heartbreaking, his legacy will endure through the memes that continue to circulate on the internet.
