Police officer who provided comfort while on duty adopts the little girl

An Arizona police officer has found a permanent home for a little girl after a chance encounter while on duty.

Brian Zach, a lieutenant with the Kingman Police Department, and his wife Cierra, joyfully embraced parenthood when they officially became the parents of 4-year-old Kaila in the summer.

The remarkable journey began in March 2018 when Zach, then serving as a patrol sergeant, responded to a call regarding Kaila’s residence. The young girl had endured abuse, and that night, Zach formed a special bond with her, as he shared with “Good Morning America.”

“We colored, we snacked…she held my hand and she was just this cute little thing,” Zach fondly recalled. “Once detectives arrived, they took her to the hospital.”

After spending hours with Kaila, Zach, who already had two children of his own, went home and expressed his desire to his wife to bring the child into their family.

On August 18, 2020, the Zachs’ wish came true as they officially adopted Kaila at the Mohave County Superior Court in Lake Havasu City, marking the culmination of their 30-month journey with her.

Reflecting on the experience, Zach shared, “We lived each week not knowing if she was going to go back to her biological parents, or how long we were going to keep her. Our goal was to love and care for this little girl for as long as it happened.”

Rusty Cooper, the chief of police at the Kingman Police Department, expressed his admiration for Lieutenant Brian Zach’s unwavering commitment to public safety, evident in his dedication and love for Kaila. Cooper praised both Brian and Cierra as exceptional parents and highlighted their selfless service to others and their involvement in a cause larger than themselves. The department takes pride in having the Zach family as part of their team.

Kaila, now 4 years old, finds joy in preschool, animals, dancing, and engaging in imaginative play during her “cruise vacations” inside a cardboard box.

Describing her personality, Zach affectionately shared, “She is so comical, she is so witty. She’s just a character.”

As a heartfelt message to families considering adoption, Zach encourages them not to fear the process, assuring them that the rewards are immeasurable and undoubtedly worth it.
