The German Shepherd was tied to the tree by the owner as a permanent measure to keep sheep away, however, the animal was deprived of shelter and water.
The police informed the Takis Shelter about a German Shepherd that had been tethered to a tree in a remote region.
Upon investigation by a rescuer and a police officer, they were appalled by the sight. The dog was certainly chained to the tree, and although they discovered a container filled with dog food, there was no access to water, indicating the dog was very thirsty.
Only a few nights before the rescue, a severe storm had occurred. If the dog had been tethered during the storm, it would have been in danger and filled with fear.
The rescuer and officer noticed the dog’s fear towards them, which led them to wonder about the other forms of mistreatment that the owner had inflicted upon the animal.
The chain that bound the dog to the tree was only one meter long, significantly limiting the animal’s mobility.
Initially, they provided the dog with water, and the animal quickly consumed the entire amount, indicating that it had been deprived of water for an extended period.
The rescuers managed to detach the chain from the tree, and then they utilized it to lead the dog towards the rescuer’s vehicle.
The dog began to place its front paws on the car door, displaying eagerness to enter inside.
In no time, the rescuer and the dog had reached the shelter.
Upon reaching the shelter, the first action the dog took was to drink from a large water bucket, indicating that it was still extremely thirsty. The animal continued to drink for three whole minutes.
After satisfying its thirst, the dog began to interact and play with the other rescues. It demonstrated remarkable friendliness and quickly became joyful.
The dog was subsequently given the name “Rex” by the shelter. Fortunately, the rescue was recorded, and the footage rapidly gained popularity online. To date, it has accumulated over 3.4 million views, 34,000 likes, and 3,100 comments. People have been expressing their thoughts about the rescue in comments such as:
Rex stayed at the shelter located in Crete, Greece until the rescuers were able to locate an owner who would value the dog for the incredible animal it is.
A woman in Germany stumbled upon the rescue video and was moved by Rex’s story. She resolved to adopt him permanently, and soon Rex would be returning to his ancestral home with his new owner.
Rex has recently arrived in Germany, which is vastly different from Crete, but the dog is promptly adjusting to his new surroundings. His new owner is lavishing him with love and attention.
This is only one of numerous success stories that have emerged from Takis Shelter.
The founder of the organization established Takis Shelter in 2014, and presently, the shelter accommodates more than 350 dogs at times. In addition to dogs, the shelter also provides care to cats, goats, and sheep.
