The desire for independence is universal. During youth, the aspiration to venture out, exercise personal choices, and acquire financial management skills becomes prominent.
Certain individuals depart for higher education, while others opt to vacate their parental abode.
Upon recognizing that their children had entered their teenage years, Matt and Linda concluded that the moment had arrived to relocate and search for a residence with more ample space.
They discovered a property featuring a sizable backyard, envisioning its potential utility in the years to come.
Certainly, a few years later, their two adolescent daughters reached an age where they could move out, yet the couple desired to keep them nearby. As a result, they embarked on a search for container homes.
They came across two stunning containers offered by Alternative Living Spaces and proceeded to purchase two container homes, each measuring 340 square feet. The price for each unit was $60,000. Opting for complete furnishings would raise the cost to approximately $70,000 per unit.
“The girls can live in there but we both have aging sets of parents that are getting older and we thought, well, if we had these storage containers, we have this multi-generational setup that we could put them out there,” said Matt.
By choosing these container homes, Matt and Linda could maintain oversight over their children, Maddie and Ashley, while also affording them the desired independence and privacy.
Furthermore, in the future, when their daughters eventually move out, the couple could reconfigure the space to accommodate their aging parents’ needs.
What a great investment!
The couple extended the sewer, power, and water connections from their main house to be shared with the two container homes. This arrangement spared the kids the concern of setting up separate utility systems.
One of the daughters, Ashley, resided in her container home for a period before eventually opting to depart for college.
Braedon, Maddie’s friend, decided to rent the space.
The container home proved to be an ideal solution for Braedon, as he was seeking a temporary living space. In contrast to an apartment, the arrangement within Maddie’s home suited him better.
Maddie’s container home boasts an expansive living room area complete with air conditioning, a television, and a generous sofa that can be converted into a bed. Braedon’s living room mirrors Maddie’s setup, but with the addition of a dog bed and an Xbox.
The kitchen in Maddie’s container remains unused as she continues to dine and prepare meals at her parent’s house. The space intended for the microwave has transformed into a showcase for her collection of caps. In contrast, the kitchen within Braedon’s container is fully equipped, featuring a microwave and storage for a small number of plates.
Maddie’s container dwelling boasts a greater quantity of clothes and shoes, with clever utilization of storage areas. On the other hand, Braedon’s container provides ample room for all his essentials, leaving him with surplus space.
When our children begin seeking independence and privacy, it tends to stir feelings of concern within us.
Matt and Linda’s concept was embraced by many due to its ability to offer the advantages of both worlds. They could impart lessons about independence and privacy to their children while simultaneously keeping a watchful eye on them and extending support whenever necessary.
