Mel Gibson’s enduring love: A 31-year journey with a nurse, 7 children, and $425m price tag

Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore Gibson had a celebrated marriage that lasted nearly thirty years, a remarkable feat in Hollywood where relationships often face short lifespans. However, their paths eventually diverged.

Their story began in the late 1970s when they crossed paths in Australia. Mel had relocated from the United States during his pre-teen years, while Robyn worked as a dental nurse and Mel pursued a career as a stage actor. Coincidentally, they found themselves sharing an apartment at that time.

In their mid-20s, both Mel and Robyn felt ready to take the plunge into marriage. In 1980, away from the glare of media attention, the actor and his soon-to-be wife quietly tied the knot in a swift and intimate ceremony held in Australia.

Maintaining a commitment to privacy, Mel safeguarded his children’s lives from the prying eyes of the public. As a devoted Catholic, the actor has been blessed with a total of nine children, with seven of them born during his marriage to Robyn.

Several of Mel’s children have found their calling in the film industry, following in their father’s footsteps. Hannah Gibson, his eldest daughter, formerly worked as a talented make-up artist. In fact, she even applied her skills to her own father while working on the set of his prominent film, “What Women Want.”

One of Mel’s twins, Christian Gibson, born in the early 1980s, pursued a career as a camera operator. Another of his sons, Louis Gibson, has delved into the realms of scriptwriting and directing. Notably, he contributed to the creation of the film “Happy Hunting.”

In the year 1990, Milo Gibson was born, choosing to embark on a path similar to his father’s as an actor. He has made appearances in notable films such as “Brother’s Keeper” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”

On a different path, Mel’s other twin, Edward Gibson, chose a distinct direction by establishing his own company, Natural Edge. As for his brother William, born in the mid-1980s, he remains an enigma, deliberately shying away from any form of public attention. Mel’s youngest child, Milo Gibson, completed his college education and earned his degree in 2017.

Although Mel and Robyn have parted ways, she played a significant role in the veteran actor’s path to recovery and sobriety. Her influence ultimately led him to make the life-changing decision to join Alcoholics Anonymous.

During a period of struggle, Mel found himself grappling with the pressures of fame and sought solace in alcohol as a means of coping. It was during this challenging time that his wife took a decisive stand, issuing an ultimatum that she would leave him if he didn’t make a significant change.

As the subsequent divorce suggests, their marital journey was not always filled with bliss. In 2002, Mel openly acknowledged the difficulties they faced, stating:

“You’re going to get ups and downs, and you’re going to get days when you really want to strangle each other…It doesn’t matter who the other person is…Every time that happens and you go through a dry spell, and in 22 years that happens a lot.”

During that period, Mel and his wife had already shared 22 years of marriage. Mel voiced his belief that people tend to abandon their relationships too hastily, refuting the notion that seeking a new partner would automatically resolve one’s problems.

Ending the Journey Together after a Lifetime

Robyn played a pivotal role in guiding her former husband towards a better path, but their marriage was heavily impacted by his alcohol consumption. The first instance of his arrest for driving under the influence took place in 1984.

In a more widely publicized controversy, Mel was apprehended for driving under the influence in 2006 while expressing anti-Semitic remarks. Consequently, the couple decided to separate in August of that same year.

By April 2009, Robyn officially initiated divorce proceedings, three years after their separation. This choice was prompted by the revelation that Oksana Grigorieva, a Russian singer and Mel’s romantic partner at the time, was pregnant.

The simultaneous occurrences raised suspicions among observers regarding the potential influence of Mel and Grigorieva’s relationship. Nevertheless, reports indicated that Mel and Robyn’s separation was generally amicable.

In a joint statement, Robyn and Mel emphasized their commitment to safeguarding the privacy and dignity of their family throughout their marriage and separation, and pledged to continue doing so.

Gibson took responsibility for the eventual dissolution of their marriage, openly discussing the divorce during an appearance as a guest on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” He sincerely acknowledged that the blame for the end of their relationship rested on his shoulders.

In November 2009, in Los Angeles, just a few months after the divorce filing, Grigorieva gave birth to a baby girl named Lucia, who was Mel’s eighth child.

Mel and Grigorieva’s relationship proved to be short-lived, coming to an end in less than six months. In the middle of 2010, the musician submitted a petition for a restraining order, accusing Mel of physical abuse. She asserted:

“I thought he would kill me.”

In an official statement, Mel refuted the accusation, asserting that it had been misunderstood. He clarified that his intention was to prevent harm to their baby, as Grigorieva was shaking the child during their altercation. The actor further maintained that he had used an open hand, not a closed fist.

Following the incident, an investigation was launched, leading to a series of legal disputes between the former couple. Additionally, damning recordings, exposing Mel’s toxic behaviors including racist language, were leaked online during that time.

Robyn came forward in support of Mel, attesting to his alleged innocence through a sworn declaration. In this statement, she affirmed that he had never inflicted harm upon her.

“Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage.”

Furthermore, she asserted that Mel had never laid a hand on any of their children and praised him as a wonderful father. However, some speculation arose suggesting that Mel’s ex-wife may have been motivated to protect herself and their children by safeguarding her ex-husband’s career from potential harm.

In January 2012, Robyn and Mel finalized their legal divorce, resulting in a settlement that was widely regarded as the largest in Hollywood history. As there was no prenuptial agreement in place, his former wife claimed a fifty percent share of their combined assets. This substantial payout amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars, considering Mel’s estimated fortune of approximately $850 million at the time.

Grigorieva’s situation took a different turn when she filed for bankruptcy in 2014. Although she was initially granted a substantial amount of money in the custody battle with Mel, the outcome did not fare well for her in the long run.

The burden of her debts, particularly from the extensive legal fees, depleted any financial victory she may have achieved. Throughout the legal battle, she cycled through a staggering number of 40 lawyers. Reports surfaced during her bankruptcy proceedings revealing that she owed a quarter of a million dollars to five of those lawyers.

During this period, she openly discussed her dire financial situation, disclosing that she was facing a debt of $438,000 while possessing only $48,000 in assets.

Embarking on a Fresh Journey with a New Partner

However, in contrast to Grigorieva’s experience, Mel found a new love interest in 2014 named Rosalind Ross, a screenwriter, and their relationship continues to thrive.

Despite the significant age difference of over three decades between Mel and the Emerson College graduate, their romance has sparked controversy among those who disapprove of such gaps. Nevertheless, the director remains unfazed by the opinions of others.

Their paths first crossed when Rosalind joined Mel’s production house as a script co-writer. She is not solely recognized as Mel’s girlfriend, but also as a talented individual in her own right. Rosalind has made notable contributions to the film industry, lending her writing skills to projects like “Escaping North Korea,” “Black Sam,” and “Matador.”

On January 22, 2017, in Los Angeles, Mel and Ross celebrated the arrival of their first child together, marking Mel’s ninth child overall. A spokesperson for the couple issued the following statement:

“They’re thrilled and Lars is adorable. Their family is all around them and Mel is over the moon.”

The spokesperson further conveyed that both mother and baby were in excellent health and had returned home. The screenwriter and director of “Passion of the Christ” named their newborn son Lars Gerard Gibson, who weighed 5 lbs. 5 oz.

In July 2020, Mel, Ross, and their three-year-old son Lars were seen together as a family, grocery shopping in Malibu. Taking precautions against COVID-19, they wore masks while strolling hand in hand through the parking lot.

Coinciding with this outing, Mel found himself embroiled in yet another controversy. Actress Winona Ryder had come forward, alleging that Mel had made anti-Semitic remarks towards her. However, Mel vehemently denies these accusations.
