Tommy O’Connor, a senior at Irvington High School in Fremont, California, found himself in a moral dilemma while leaving a 7-Eleven store. He stumbled upon a wallet on the ground after purchasing a beverage, and upon inspecting its contents, he discovered a significant sum of money amounting to $2,300 in cash.
Tommy faced a choice between keeping the money for himself or making the right decision and returning the wallet to its rightful owner.

Showing remarkable integrity, Tommy immediately took the wallet and cash to his paraeducator, Anna Gomez, at school. His sole concern was finding the owner, and he never entertained the thought of keeping the money.
With the help of Irvington Principal Sarah Smoot, Tommy and Anna were able to locate the owner, a war veteran, by finding his Veterans Identification Card within the wallet.

Grateful for the return of his wallet and money, the owner, whose name remains unknown, confirmed that the cash was meant for his rent and expressed his appreciation by giving Tommy $50. Tommy’s selfless act is even more commendable considering his own family’s financial struggles, living paycheck to paycheck and not having enough money for lunch the day before discovering the wallet.

Tommy’s parents, Ron and Sherry O’Connor, are rightfully proud of their son’s integrity. Despite their difficult circumstances, they are grateful that Tommy’s moral compass remained steadfast and that he resisted the temptation to keep the money. Tommy, however, deflects the credit, believing that anyone else would have done the same in his position.
Dipa Kalra, one of Tommy’s teachers, describes him as a compassionate individual who always looks out for his peers. Tommy’s actions exemplify true compassion, the ability to understand and empathize with others’ feelings.

While Tommy received only $50 instead of the $2,300, the invaluable example he set outweighs any monetary reward.
