Avey Cox, an 8-year-old girl, had assumed that she wouldn’t be able to attend a daddy-daughter dance, a special event that many young girls dream of experiencing with their fathers, after her dad passed away. However, a police officer in Arkansas helped make Avey’s dream come true.
A police officer steps up to help out
Demonstrating kindness, school resource officer Nick Harvey from Van Buren, Arkansas volunteered to accompany the girl to the dance instead of her father. However, he needed to obtain permission first.
“I reached out to the mother because the last thing I wanted was to get rejected by a second-grader, and then the next day I formally asked if she’d be my date to the daddy/daughter dance,” Harvey told KFSM.
Planning for the big night
Avey was thrilled when Officer Harvey invited her to the dance. She had longed to go to the school event but had thought it was no longer possible after losing her father. Following Avey’s acceptance of the invitation, she and Harvey collaborated to plan their outfits.
Dancing their hearts out
During the special evening, Officer Harvey and Avey joined other fathers and daughters in taking photos together. They then hopped into a stretch limousine and headed to the dance venue. At the event, they danced their hearts out with the other elementary school students and their teachers.

One of the most remarkable highlights of the evening was when Harvey and Avey shared a dance during the father-daughter dance segment. The video capturing this emotional moment was uploaded online and quickly became viral.
“It meant a lot because I actually got to go and see all my friends there,” Cox told 5News. “And then, I got to go with him and have a lot of fun.”
Harvey acknowledged the night’s extraordinary significance, and it was an experience he would always cherish. He and Avey created many delightful memories during and after the dance.
“I embarrassed myself a little bit and danced when I can’t dance at all,” Harvey said with a laugh.
A night to remember
Following the dance, Harvey, Avey, and some of her classmates headed out to get ice cream, and afterward, Avey was taken home in Harvey’s police vehicle. Officer Harvey’s compassionate act exemplified kindness in the world, and online, people could perceive the purity and significance of his actions.
