Throughout his life, James Caan was married multiple times and had a large family. But he didn’t make the decision to change his life until after he lost his dear sister.
James Caan passed away on July 7, 2022, leaving the world without a cherished talent.
The actor had a very meaningful life over his entire 82 years on this earth. He tied the knot with actress Dee Jay Mathis in 1961. The pair was only married for a total of five years before they filed for divorce in 1966. During that time, they had a daughter whom they called Tara.
Caan remarried not long after his first marriage ended. This time around, Sheila Ryan, a Playboy model. He remarried Ryan in 1976, but their divorce in 1977 made it even shorter than his first union. However, the couple had their son Scott Caan during their marriage.
Caan, never one to give up, began dating Ingrid Hajek and married her in 1990. He was 20 years older than his wife. Before divorcing in 1994, they had a son together, whom they called Alexander.
Soon after going through his third divorce, he found himself falling in love again. In 1995, the actor tied the knot with Linda Stokes. This was his longest union, which lasted for twenty years, but the marriage was, at best, turbulent.
In 1981, Caan was dealt a blow that changed the course of his life forever when he learned that his sister Barbara Caan had passed away. Barbara Caan was only 38 years old when she passed away, and she had been battling leukemia for some time before her death.
When he found out that his sister had passed away, it completely broke his heart. According to the reports, he described himself as feeling “vulnerable and despondent.” He did not merely refer to Barbara as his sister; rather, he described her as his manager as well as his best friend. Barbara managed his production company and maintained a close relationship with her sibling throughout their lives.
Caan learned a lot of things after she died. He was afraid of no one else but her. He also saw how easy it was for things to end, and how passions could also end. So he changed his mind and is said to have said, “My passion was to grow up with my son.”
James put his career on hold so he could help Scott grow up. Scott says that when he was growing up, his father didn’t do many projects, and Scott didn’t even know that his father was an actor until he was 15 years old.
After the passing of James Caan’s sister when Scott was approximately five years old, James Caan made the decision to put his career on wait and concentrate on raising his son.
He was unaware of the fame his father had, and because the majority of his father’s work was not suitable for children, he was only able to watch his first film starring his dad when he was 11 years old. He was a little disturbed after watching “The Godfather.”
It was not all rosy, despite Jame’s dedication to his son. Later, Scott acknowledged in interviews that the connection between the son and his father was highly dysfunctional.
James was honest about his shortcomings as a parent as well. He later acknowledged that he may have caused his son some discomfort while battling his addiction. At the time, he acknowledged that he was “a little rough around the edges.”
On the other hand, Scott does not have any anger toward his dad. In spite of the fact that certain choices had a bad impact on both of them, he could not ignore the fact that his dad was always there for him.
As Scott approached his pre-teen and teenage years, it was a particularly difficult time for their relationship. Despite the fact that Scott was athletic and followed in his father’s footsteps by playing sports, between the ages of 11 and 12, he expressed a desire to forge his own unique personality and withdraw from participating in the sports that his dad enjoyed. In addition to this, he began associating with bad individuals and engaging in illegal drug use.
James Caan enjoyed team sports, which inspired his son to engage in hobbies his father disapproved of like skateboarding and surfing. These two activities were seen as being reserved for troublemakers at the time.
The elder Caan did not like that his son was involved in these things. People who were talented but wasted it were one of his pet peeves. He anticipated that his small son would either excel at what he did in a similar manner or not do it at all.
Caan did his best as a parent, but he wasn’t faultless. In an interview, he stated, “I never saw my dad cry. My son saw me cry. My dad never told me he loved me, and consequently, I told Scott I loved him every other minute.”
He took parenting very seriously because he wanted to raise his son Scott to be the “perfect Caan.”
And in July of 2014, Caan jr welcomed his first child into the world. He and his long-term girlfriend, Kacy Byxbee, are now the proud parents of a daughter. They decided to give their daughter the name Josie James Caan, and just like his own dad, Scott Caan took some time off work after his daughter was born.
However, Scott Caan chose to pursue a career in acting, much like his father had done. He received his training in Los Angeles at the Playhouse West. After making his debut in the remade version of “Ocean’s Eleven” in 2001, he went on to appear in a number of well-known television shows and films, including “Hawaii Five-0,” “Into the Blue,” and a few others.
Even while James intended to bring up the ideal Caan, he did not want his son to follow in his footsteps and become a Hollywood actor like James had. Later on, Scott revealed that the reason his father was reluctant was because he knew it would be challenging. “He knew it would be hard to do this job over and over again, and it’s creatively hard to get excited about playing the same dude for seven years.”
The late actor frequently reminded those who were just starting out in the industry that they should prioritize their families over their jobs. He was famous for telling many aspiring young performers that “family first” was their first priority in life.
