Girl, seven, shot dead at Atlanta family gathering after dispute between adults

A family gathering in Atlanta turned deadly Saturday night when a domestic dispute erupted and a child was shot to death, according to 11 Alive.

A 7-year-old girl was shot at least once inside an apartment unit in the Camden Vantage Apartments shortly before 10:15 p.m., according to Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr.

The apartment is located on Jackson Street in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood in the city’s northeast.

Hampton stated that there was a domestic dispute involving multiple adults that escalated into gunfire.

According to FOX 5, first responders rushed the girl to a nearby hospital, but she had already died as a result of the gunshot wound.

“What we know thus far in this investigation is that it was a domestic incident that escalated. During that escalation we know that there was an exchange of gunfire,” Hampton said at a press conference, FOX 5 reports. “During this exchange of gunfire, that’s when our victim was hit.”

No suspects have been arrested by police in relation to the shooting. Several attendees of the gathering, including a man, reportedly fled the scene following the gunfire. Investigators are attempting to determine what, if any, role he may have played in the shooting.

“Any death is tragic,” Hampton said during the press conference, according to 11 Alive. “But when there is a child involved, it really hits home.”
