When 5-year-old Charlie Paige told her parents she wanted to change her name to Charlotte, they didn’t take her seriously. But Charlie was determined and wrote her mother a letter expressing her wish to change her name.
Her mother, Bri, shared Charlie’s story on TikTok in celebration of Women’s History Day, and the video went viral, receiving over 4 million views. In the video, Bri shared the letters Charlie wrote, which included sentiments like “Charlotte makes me feel strong, independent, pretty, creative and loved.”
Charlie learned that to change her name, she would have to go to court, pay a fee of almost $200, have her name change published, and have her parents agree to it. Undeterred, she began selling friendship bracelets to raise the money for the fee and had already raised $80 by the time her mother found out.
While Charlie’s father initially opposed the name change, he eventually made her a custom backpack with the name “Charlotte” on it, hinting that he may have agreed to the change. Bri and Charlie ended the video by asking for suggestions on how to convince Charlie’s dad to support the name change. As Bri put it, “Someday, my daughter’s going to make history.”
