Hari Budha Magar, a courageous British army veteran who lost both his legs while serving in Afghanistan, has etched his name in the annals of mountaineering history as the first double above-knee amputee to conquer the formidable Mount Everest.
After a grueling ascent, spanning 13 years since the life-altering incident, Magar triumphantly reached the summit of the 8,849-meter peak on a fateful Friday. Speaking through a satellite phone, Magar candidly expressed that the journey was far more arduous than he could have ever imagined.
“We encountered immense challenges, but we were determined to press on and strive for the pinnacle, regardless of the pain or duration,” Magar shared with unwavering determination.
With an unwavering belief in the human spirit, Magar passionately conveyed, “If I can ascend to the top of the world, then anyone, irrespective of their disability, can pursue and accomplish their dreams. No matter how lofty one’s aspirations may be, and no matter how formidable the obstacles posed by their disability, the right mindset holds the key to unlocking infinite possibilities.”
Magar’s conquest of Everest adds another remarkable chapter to his legacy of trailblazing achievements. Prior to this awe-inspiring feat, he had already carved a name for himself as the first double above-knee amputee to scale several mountains, including Mera Peak and Chulu Far East.
In 2018, Magar fearlessly united with fellow climbers and disability organizations to challenge and overturn a ban on disabled individuals climbing Everest, successfully petitioning Nepal’s Supreme Court for inclusivity and opportunity.
Reflecting upon his indomitable spirit, Magar revealed that the unwavering support of his family and the countless individuals who assisted him on his journey served as a powerful source of inspiration.
“When the going got unbearably tough, it was the thought of my incredible family and the unwavering support of all those who helped me reach the mountain’s summit that propelled me forward,” Magar expressed with heartfelt gratitude. “Without the encouragement and assistance of so many, this extraordinary expedition would simply have remained an elusive dream.”
Magar has also embarked on a noble fundraising mission for five charitable organizations, aiming to generate £884,900 ($1.65 million) in donations—a symbolic gesture aligning with the majestic height of Mount Everest.
