Dad raises son with Down syndrome alone after mom considers foster care

Across the globe, every day, countless newborns come into the world with unique conditions that set them apart. All babies are beautiful and deserving of love and care, yet regrettably, some parents still struggle to accept this truth. In a world supposedly driven by understanding and compassion, babies born with Down syndrome continue to face unwarranted uncertainty due to persistent prejudice.

In Russia, one father, Evgeny Anisimov, is taking a stand against the stigma surrounding Down syndrome. He is not only independently raising his son, Misha, who has the condition, but also striving to show that these children are just as deserving of love and acceptance as any other.

Evgeny’s journey began when his wife chose to leave after being unable to cope with their son’s diagnosis. Upon learning about Misha’s condition just 1 minute and 39 seconds after birth, Evgeny faced a range of emotions. He decided to be strong for his wife and remained silent about the diagnosis until the results of further analysis were available.

Reflecting on this challenging time, Evgeny shared, “My life hadn’t changed, in general. But the child is special, his life and future destiny are already very significant. And I’m roaring here! This is some kind of selfishness! Is it not fair? No, it is my responsibility.”

Determined to understand and support his son, Evgeny began researching Down syndrome that same night. He discovered that in Europe, individuals with Down syndrome are well-integrated into society, living and working independently. However, his decision to stand by his son was not solely influenced by these findings.

Evgeny’s wife eventually chose a different path, leading to their separation. Despite this, Evgeny never considered leaving his son in an orphanage. He became a single father, emphasizing that being there for his child is a natural responsibility, not an act of heroism.

Evgeny’s mission goes beyond his own experience; he aims to raise awareness about Down syndrome, dispelling the notion that it is an insurmountable obstacle or punishment. He hopes that his story will inspire and encourage others facing similar challenges.

In his words, “I want all the articles about Mishka and me that are being published now to convey that idea to society and instill it… Have no fear! Everything will be fine!” Through his unwavering commitment and determination, Evgeny Anisimov is shedding light on the beauty and potential of every child, regardless of their circumstances.
