Couple travels everywhere with colossal giraffe to bring joy to people’s faces

Sally and Larry McNabb are impossible to overlook when they’re cruising around town. You can spot their red convertible, and, of course, the enormous stuffed giraffe occupying the back seat.

“It’s so funny watching people. They’re taking pictures of us. They’re smiling. They’re waving,” said Larry McNabb.

Sprinkles the giraffe accompanies the convertible on all its adventures. Although initially meant for their daughter, it’s the parents who have ended up having all the fun.

Larry McNabb mentioned that their daughter has a deep fondness for giraffes, especially enjoying feeding them at the zoo. This is where the idea of incorporating giraffes into their outings originated.

Sally McNabb recalled redecorating her daughter’s bedroom and ordering the giraffe online. When it arrived, she took it out of the box and noticed it was near their older convertible. She thought it might appear amusing in the back seat. Subsequently, she and the large stuffed giraffe took a short drive around the neighborhood.

She also mentioned that the kids in the area reacted with laughter and waves. As a result, she decided to drive it to work the next day, and the rest of the story unfolded from there.

She promptly recognized that this could serve as a simple means to spread happiness to others and encouraged her husband to participate.

“She came and said, ‘Oh, you’ve got to do it!’ I said, ‘I ain’t driving around with no giraffe in the car, Sally!’ ‘Oh, you just got to try it.’ I tried it once and was hooked,” Larry McNabb said.

Now, fifteen years later, Sprinkles the giraffe accompanies the couple on every journey. He has become as integral to the car as the steering wheel itself.

Sally McNabb mentioned that they drive cautiously because they’re aware that any driving mishaps would be associated with the red convertible and the giraffe.

Larry McNabb explained that he takes precautions by strapping the giraffe down and securing it with seat belts.

Their children, including the daughter who initially inspired the idea, consider their actions a bit unconventional. According to Sally McNabb, “She thinks we’re nuts! [Laughs] We have one daughter who loves Sprinkles, and our other two daughters and son would probably never ride with us.”

When questioned about their motivation, Larry McNabb elaborated, stating, “To share blessing. I mean, really, that’s what it’s all about, sharing blessings and making people smile. God’s blessed us, so we want to bless others.”

According to the McNabbs, nearly every outing leads to someone breaking into a smile.
