Jordan Benewiat’s 8th birthday was marred by her mother’s drunkenness, a common sight for Jordan and her brother Jarred. However, on this particular night, their mother’s behavior turned violent, resulting in extensive damage to their home. When her boyfriend returned from out of town, he contacted the police, and as a result, the children were promptly placed into foster care.
Although lacking a family relationship, Steven Benewiat was committed to providing a stable home for the two children to grow and develop in. When no other suitable homes were available to accommodate both siblings, he was granted emergency custody, enabling him to fulfill this role.
“The first time I saw my dad cry was the day he thought we were being taken by the state,” Jordan tells Love What Matters. “I had no idea why he was crying in the courtroom but when he explained it to me I burst into tears and he just hugged me until we had to leave. Luckily by divine intervention, he was given emergency foster rights.”
Adoption & Healing
Three years had elapsed from the day Steven took in Jordan and Jarred until their official adoption. However, ever since the day they entered his care, their lives have undergone a remarkable and positive transformation.
“My dad gave me stability and safety I had never known before. Before I met him as far back as I can remember I was scared and worried. My brother and I had to worry about whether we would eat, if we would go to school if our mom would die from drinking too much,” Jordan tells Love What Matters.
“He showed up every time we needed him to. He gave me back the second half of my childhood. I was finally able to ride my bike, go to school, play sports, and never worry about dinner. He gave me someone you want to call when my life feels like it’s falling apart. He gave me the safety I had never known. My life wouldn’t look at all like it does without him.”
Honoring A True Hero
Jordan shared her appreciation for her father and his kindness in a TikTok video that has since gone viral, with over 9 million views and 1.4 million likes. The comments section is brimming with admiration and affection for Steven.

Thanks to the love and care provided by Steven during her childhood, Jordan has been able to overcome her traumatic past and become a contented and joyful young adult. Her connection with him is regarded as one of the most significant aspects of her life.
