A distressing incident unfolded during a commercial flight from Miami to Chile, as a pilot, Iván Andaur, 56, collapsed and passed away in the restroom. This unfortunate event compelled an emergency landing in Panama on Sunday night, as conveyed by sources who were present on the aircraft.
Iván Andaur was in control of the LATAM Airlines flight bound for Santiago when he experienced what appeared to be a cardiac arrest around 11 p.m., as reported by the Sun.
In response, the two co-pilots had to swiftly carry out an emergency landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. Meanwhile, the plane had a nurse and two doctors onboard who rushed to provide assistance in an attempt to save him, according to the information detailed in the paper.
“Unfortunately, we did not have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation,” stated the nurse, identified solely as Isadora on social media.
“LATAM needs to improve the issue of protocol in case of health and medical emergencies like this where lives can be saved but the resources are needed,” she emphasized, expressing a need for improvements in such critical situations.
The nature of the specific “resources” she mentioned remains unclear at this time.
According to a passenger’s account, approximately 40 minutes into the flight, one of the co-pilots made an announcement asking if there were any doctors present on the aircraft.

“They told us that we were going to land because the pilot felt sick and when we arrived they asked us to evacuate the plane because the situation had worsened,” said the passenger, who was not identified.
Following the emergency landing, passengers were accommodated in hotels in Panama City, and the flight resumed on Tuesday.
The airline stated, “All the necessary protocols were followed during the flight to safeguard the life of the
affected pilot. Unfortunately, after landing and receiving further medical assistance, the pilot
passed away,”
