“81 and Still on the Run!” BFFs demonstrate that you are never too old to travel the world

“Many people imagine a life of ease and relaxation when they reach their 80s, but best friends Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip have a different idea. “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” exclaimed Sandy, a physician specializing in hospice and geriatric care.

The two ladies from Abilene, Texas met while traveling in Africa and are now on a mission to explore the world. Inspired by Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days,” they embarked on an epic adventure called “Around the World at 80” that took them to all seven continents, 9 Wonders of the World, and 18 countries in about two-and-a-half months.

Despite a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they resumed their travels in 2023, exclaiming a new motto “81 and still on the run!” With a zest for life, they have experienced the Northern Lights, dog-sledding, flying over Mt. Everest, and frolicking with penguins in Antarctica.

They are also passionate about meeting new people and have made many friends on their journey. Sandy and Ellie’s journey is documented on social media and their blog, inspiring others to keep moving into their golden years.

They believe in simplicity and have a unique approach when choosing their travel companions. “We don’t travel first class,” Sandy explained. “And so when we have other ladies, especially who say, ‘Oh, I would love to travel with you two,’ the first thing I always do is look at their hands.
